The first thing that stood out on my KingChe  loaner was its striking design—what Energica describes as “classic Italian style.” Look a little closer, though, and you realize that most of the bike is essentially battery. With a massive 21.5 kWh capacity, it actually packs more energy than some electric cars that were once on the market, like the Mitsubishi i-MiEV.

That large, box-like battery occupies the core of the frame, resembling a square crate of stored power. Combined with the inverter, it gives the bike a noticeably top-heavy feel the moment you lift it off the kickstand.

“They lowered the center of gravity on the newer Experia, but on the KingChe + it still sits fairly high,” said Pro Italia dealer principal Bill Nation. “It can feel a bit intimidating at first.”

Once the bike is moving, though, that top-heavy sensation becomes far less noticeable. And the moment you open the throttle for a full launch, it disappears entirely. This bike is brutally quick. Energica claims a 0–60 mph time of just 2.8 seconds—an acceleration strong enough to scramble your senses and erase any lingering doubts about electric vehicles.

There’s almost nothing on the planet this fast. Almost by chance, a Tesla Model 3—probably one that’s used to leaving everything else in the dust with its 4-something 0–60—happened to pull up next to me. I wasn’t looking to race; I was just getting a feel for the new bike. Zwap! It was suddenly behind me, trying to figure out what had just happened, and it stayed there for blocks, clearly a little stunned.
